Claus Tøndering, IT consultant and developer of 3ET, released this new tool January 2010. The project for developing a test and exercise tool for teaching Introductory Hebrew Grammar began in July 2008 as a core tool for the 3BH Moodle using the grammar of Genesis 1-3 as teaching material. Since the summer of 2009 it has been tested in Nicolai Winther-Nielsens course, and the results indicate that students and teachers can profit immensely from building exercises and tests for the study of Biblical Hebrew. 3ET can output XML files to be imported into the Question Bank of Moodle, the world's most widely distributed e-learning system.

We expect to market a 3ET with a Greek New Testament in the UBS version by 2011, and it will replace the Tischendorf version of 3ET. This product will be sold by 3BM and the German Bible Society.

Nicolai Winther-Nielsen is building the 3BH system with 3ET-based learning actitivities available for Moodle. He is goal is to see how well the self-learning text in 3ET and/or on Moodle can compete with other Hebrew learning systems, and how this technology may assist theological education in poor countries. He will test the 3ET tool at Madagascar's Lutheran Graduate School SALT in February and March 2010. Current work focus' on how to integrate into the ongoing development of the 3BH Moodle persuasive learning environment for the new PLOT theory.

3ET uses any text parsed and stored in the Emdros database format (http://www.emdros.org/).

  • The first prototype for Greek and Hebrew was shown at software presentation the Copenhagen Lutheran School of Theology December 18 2008.
  • The tool was discussed in a presentation by Claus Tøndering at a conference on Persuasive Database Technology and  Applications at the Copenhagen Institute of Technology March 30 2009
  • Nicolai Winther-Nielsen preseented 3ET in relation to teaching in paper for the SBL conference in New Orleans in November 2009 which is available at 3BH - News (Login as guest) (http://www.3bmoodle.dk/course/view.php?id=33).
  • Claus Tøndering releases 3ET January 5 2010.

The aim of 3BM was to develop a web-based study environment for individuals, classes, schools or universities using Moodle. It will let the teacher or the students build tests and exercises in order to enhance blended teaching and self-tutoring within a Moodle course environment. Winther-Nielsen will develop Genesis Tests for distribution by 3BM. Claus Tøndering exploits the Emdros database and query language further (http://www.emdros.org/), and this technology for building exercises and tests from parsed texts in other ancient and modern languages.

The Deutsche Bibelgesellschaft in Stuttgart has given us permission to distribute the Werkgroep Informatica Hebrew text data base (WIVU) of Genesis 1-3 as part of the first version. We hope that it will eventually be possible for customers to buy the entire WIVU text for 3ET, because this text is not only available in SESB, but also in SESB http://www.logos.com/comparison and thus can be used by both continental Europaean and American users of Libronix.

Background of developer:

Claus Tøndering is IT consultant and company owner (http://www.ezer.dk/). He is using the Emdros database system to develop an automated generation of exercise and test material (http://www.emdros.org/). His project is the first attempt ever to integrate this new database technology into the leading open source learning environment Moodle.
