The Bergman eLearning of Biblical Hebrew for Beginners

The Bergman eLearning of Biblical Hebrew for Beginners is a complete course for learning basic Biblical Herbrew in Moodle designed for students at universities, colleges, seminaries and high schools. The course is based on the exercises and unique learning concepts developed in Nava Bergman’s seminal book The Cambridge Biblical Hebrew Workbook, Cambridge University Press 2005 (click HERE, or http://www.cambridge.org/catalogue/catalogue.asp?isbn=9780521826310, and buy HERE).

  • "It is most welcome to find a Biblical Hebrew workbook of this academic calibre published in the UK." Fiona Blumfield, Bulletin of the School of Oriental and African Studies 69:1, 2006
  • ”This book is clearly the product of hard work, impressive creativity, and openness to rethinking how biblical Hebrew might best be taught.” Frederick E. Greenspahn, Religious Studies Review 32: 1, 2006
  • ”Exploration of the layout and variety of exercises contained in this workbook shows that much care and practical experience has gone into the production of this excellent tool, and that the author has neither oversimplified nor unduly complicated the endeavour of learning Biblical Hebrew for beginning students. She has provided an excellent alternative approach, and enriched this with numerous practical exercises, which, if faithfully and systematically carried out, should produce a  rich harvest.” Carmel Mccarthy, Journal of Semitic Studies 52:2, 2007

The Bergman eLearning of Biblical Hebrew for Beginners project supplements Bergman’s workbook by complete grammatical charts for each section together with introductory supporting material, sound files, interactive exercise and test material, a seperate module with complete grammatical synopses and verb charts and last but not least a variety of optional enrichment modules of cultural and historical nature which will enable students to experience the language of the Bible in its authentic context and of which each teacher/student may choose according to his/her needs and interests.

The project will combine advanced teaching practices with cutting edge learning technology. It will use open standard Web 2.0 applications for developing material for individual study as well as blended learning based on many years of experience with teaching and producing e-Learning tools by Nava Bergman. The e-Learning technology will be implemented by Associate professor Nicolai Winther-Nielsen and IT consultant Claus Tøndering who are developing new tools for teaching based on the open source e-Learning platform Moodle (see Genesis tests).

Nava Bergman, lecturer at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden, is a native speaker of Hebrew and has taught Modern and Biblical Hebrew since 1989. In 1999 she was awarded the individual pedagogical prize at her university for her distinguished pedagogical material in Biblical Hebrew which has been published in Sweden in 2000 (Studentlitteratur). She is also the author of The Cambridge Biblical Hebrew Workbook, which is the first volume of her comprehensive Biblical Hebrew study-kit. In 2007–2008 Bergman has developed a netbased course in Biblical Hebrew for beginners in Swedish.
